The Northern Ireland Fishermen’s Federation (NIFF) reaffirms its zero-tolerance policy towards all forms of modern slavery and human trafficking, committing to ethical and transparent practices across all business operations. NIFF is determined to prevent any form of exploitation within its own organization, among its member organizations—the Anglo Northern Ireland Fish Producers Organisation (ANIFPO) and the Northern Ireland Fish Producers Organisation (NIFPO)—and throughout its supply chain. Our commitment extends to Tier 1 and 2 suppliers, third-party contractors, and associated stakeholders.

As part of this commitment, NIFF has established stringent policies to prevent and address modern slavery risks. All members, employees, and contracted parties are held to these standards, with breaches subject to disciplinary measures that may include termination of contracts, dismissal, or expulsion from producer organizations. Additionally, all new suppliers and third-party partners are required to read, acknowledge, and adhere to NIFF’s upcoming Code of Conduct and participate in a sustainability risk assessment as part of the onboarding process.

In line with the Modern Slavery Act 2015, NIFF continues to enhance efforts to identify, prevent, and address potential risks. Regular training, clear reporting channels, including a Whistleblowing Policy, and ongoing assessments help ensure that our practices remain vigilant and effective.

This statement, approved and signed by Co-Chairs Mr. Harry Wick and Mr. Brian Chambers, is available for both print and electronic access, underscoring NIFF’s transparent stance on this crucial issue.

See Our Modern Slavery Statement here.

Robert Goodwill.

Harry Wick, Chief Executive of the Northern Ireland Fish Producers’ Organisation (NIFPO), NI’s largest membership of fishermen said:

“I’m delighted to welcome Mr Goodwill back to Northern Ireland and in particular to our fishing ports. It’s great that he accepted the industry’s invitation as it allows us to showcase at the very highest level the progress that our fishing communities are making locally. 2019 so far looks like it could be the best year in quite some time for our fishermen and reflects the positive feeling around the fleet that our sustainable practices are paying off and that NI fishing is on the up and up.”

Mr Goodwill is no stranger to NI having previously been a member of the NI Affairs Committee. Fisheries Minister Robert Goodwill said:

“I am delighted to visit the fishing ports of Arglass and Kilkeel at such a pivotal time for our fishing industry as we leave the EU and become an independent coastal state. With a high quality catch and a skilled workforce, it is heartening to see first-hand the ambitious plans for the future and share our enthusiasm for fishing with future generations.”

Mr Wick said:

“Today NIFPO is launching our “SAFEGUARD THE FUTURE | #supportNIfishing” campaign. If we deplete our fish stocks, lose licenses & quotas overseas, lack commercial interest in our produce and our kids don’t want to go into fishing, our future is bleak. We are the custodians of an historic fishing industry that needs to be around hundreds of years from now when Brexit will be a footnote in history.

Whilst the politics rumbles on the campaign keeps us all focused on what is important; engaging our children, the future fishermen, to ensure they grow up with a view that NI fishing is worth fighting for and preserving; educating and engaging our current fishermen on sustainability to ensure there are fish stocks for their grandchildren’s grandchildren to fish; enabling the next generation of fishermen to buy boats and quotas; and to ensure there is a consumer demand for our world class seafood at the premium price that it warrants, meaning a commercially valuable catch upon which our future harbour economies will depend.

With the absence of a Minister in Stormont it can be difficult for our issues to get the representation they deserve, so we are grateful to Mr Goodwill for taking the time to visit us, to listen to what those issues are and to help us launch this important campaign”.

During the visit children from St Nicholas’ Primary School were on the quayside using touch tanks to get up close and personal with Ardglass sea life as part of a Harbour Authority sponsored education scheme. Pupils from the school will also soon be able to benefit from a purpose built eco garden, built in partnership with NIFPO.

“Sustainability and conservation have been at the heart of what we do in the NI industry for some time now. It is fantastic to have the chance to help instil those values in what we hope may be the next generation of responsible fishers.” Said Mr Wick

What is the ‘SAFEGUARD OUR FUTURE | #supportNIfishing’ campaign?

If we deplete our fish stocks, lose licenses & quotas overseas, lack commercial interest in our produce and our kids don’t want to go into fishing … our future is bleak. Harry Wick, CEO, NIFPO

ENGAGE THE NEXT GENERATIONS
Educate our children about their fishing heritage, engage them in the fishing sector, create attractive pipelines into fishing

STOP THE OVERSEAS DRAIN OF NI LICENCES & FISHING OPPORTUNITY
Enable the next generation to buy license and quota from our own retiring fishermen ensuring NI fishing capacity stays in Northern Ireland

CREATE A DEMAND FOR OUR WORLD CLASS SEAFOOD
Differentiate our produce from the rest of the UK & Ireland, ensure it is sold for high-end prices as quality produce

CONTINUE ENSURING THERE ARE STOCKS TO FISH FOR THE FUTURE
Ongoing engagement of NI fishermen in sustainable fishing techniques to safeguard future stocks, holding ourselves to the high standards that our customers expect

GROW A FEELING OF COMMUNITY OWNERSHIP & PRIDE
Locals will only want to save what they value and feel worth saving. Develop community collaboration and co-operation

Found at www.nifpo.co.uk, NIFPO – The Northern Ireland Fish Producers’ Organisation – have launched a new website and digital strategy.

A platform site, the new digital space is a live channel for CEO Harry Wick’s social content, to keep his members, the fishing communities and stakeholders up-to-date during the Brexit process. It also features a Media Centre, live quota details, updates on NIFPO’s work in the community and promotion of the world class catch we have here in Northern Ireland.

The digital strategy centres around live updates on twitter, facebook and linkedin, enabling the NIFPO CEO, Board members and key stakeholders to engage directly with the fishermen, the fishing communities, media, Government and NI Plc.

Harry Wick, CEO of NIFPO says:

“Brexit has highlighted just how important the role of NIFPO is to our fishermen and their families. Not only are we representing fishermen in the Brexit process, but we have a role to support their families and our harbour communities. We sit in between a large numbers of people on either side of us who need to communicate clearly with each other through us. Unless we know what all parties want our role is limited and ineffective. Our new site and supporting digital strategy enables direct access to myself from everyone – Government, media, fishermen, public – and a free flow of information and updates. Vitally it gives myself and our Board direct access to the opinions and views of our members – straw polls, litmus tests, hard data and sound bites – all crucial to the ongoing events around Brexit. It also gives NIFPO a platform (away from Brexit) to celebrate local people, be an effective cog in #supportlocal initiatives vital to the health of our small harbour economies and to lead the the Northern Irish fishing industry forward to ensure sustainable prosperity for all.”

Harry Wick, CEO of NIFPO said:

“Our logo was dated and a freshening up of the brand has been long overdue. I’m delighted with the results.

Our brand strapline ‘Representing Northern Irish fishermen since 1975’ identifies the historical start of NIFPO, formed to represent NI fishermen after the UK joined the EEC. With Brexit ongoing our vital role representing our fishermen continues.

The 3 pillars we are built on now form our brand statement:
Representing fishermen | Supporting fishing communities | Safeguarding the future.

Following the success of the NI football team and the positive view of our fans worldwide (and the infamous Will Grigg song) we felt it right to use blue and green that we’re known for, blue also being the sea and green the land.

Our brand will now be rolled out digitally as well as onto our buildings, clothing and printed materials.”

SAFEGUARD OUR FUTURE | #supportNIfishing campaign

1. ENGAGE THE NEXT GENERATIONS
Educate our children about their fishing heritage, engage them in the fishing sector, create attractive pipelines into fishing

2. STOP THE OVERSEAS DRAIN OF NI LICENSES & FISHING OPPORTUNITY
Enable the next generation to buy license and quota from our own retiring fishermen ensuring NI fishing capacity stays in Northern Ireland

3. CREATE A DEMAND FOR OUR WORLD CLASS SEAFOOD
Differentiate our produce from the rest of the UK & Ireland, ensure it is sold for high-end prices as quality produce

4. CONTINUE ENSURING THERE ARE STOCKS TO FISH FOR THE FUTURE
Ongoing engagement of NI fishermen in sustainable fishing techniques to safeguard future stocks, holding ourselves to the high standards that our customers expect

5. GROW A FEELING OF COMMUNITY OWNERSHIP & PRIDE
Locals will only want to save what they value and feel worth saving. Develop community collaboration and co-operation
