Responsible Sustainable Fishing
The 3 pillars of NIFPO are:

Representing fishermen
Your opinion will be sought and your voice will be heard at the highest level

Supporting fishing communities
We help your families and the towns and villages you live in

Safeguarding the future
We will ensure there is a fishing industry for your grandchildren to inherit
Responsible and sustainable fishing are therefore at the core of what we do. Irresponsible and unsustainable practices today mean we will be unable to safeguard the future of our harbour economies which depend on the sea. It makes no sense.
In the whole scheme of things when looking at the planet as a whole, we are a tiny fleet fishing in a very small patch of water. Despite our size we punch above our weight delivering a world class catch that is served on plates around the world. If we deplete those precious stocks, pollute the sea and act irresponsibly then there will be nothing left to pass onto our children and our grandchildren.
We recognise that we are the piscatorial custodians of this tiny patch of the planet, handed on to us from our ancestors, which we will pass on to future generations. It is our job, therefore, to pass it on in a better state than we inherited it.
But it’s not just the fish stocks and the environment we’re passing on, it’s a mindset and attitude that our children and grandchildren observe and ultimately copy. If our fishermen throw rubbish into the sea from their boats, leave fuel leaks unfixed, flout the rules and show a general disregard for the environment … those practices will be copied.
This is why we are proud to represent a fleet of fishermen who care, have pride and who intend to pass on to the next generation both a sustainable catch found in a clean environment, as well at the right ethos and attitudes to suit the modern era.
Our Seafood– Wild Caught, World Class
Northern Irish fishermen have been fishing the waters of the Irish Sea and the North East Atlantic off the coast of Northern Ireland for langoustine prawns, scallops and white fish for generations:
- Our clean deep waters and strong currents provide the perfect environment for world class seafood
- Our sustainable fishing methods have meant that the stocks have not been drained
- Our community catches, lands, processes, distributes and sells our seafood, giving us a strong local economy
As a result, we have a thriving fishing sector here in Northern Ireland and are confidently moving forwards into a post-Brexit world.
Langoustine prawns | Dublin Bay Prawn
Our deep fishing waters in the Irish Sea and the North East Atlantic off the coast of Northern Ireland provide the perfect conditions for our world class langoustine prawns. Our species is the famous Dublin Bay Prawn, latin name: Nephrops norvegicus, a member of the lobster family, known also as the Norway Lobster. It’s larger relative explains why they are so big and so tasty!
Locally our Northern Irish langoustine prawn is slightly smaller than its deeper cousins, giving it the sweeter, more luxurious taste that is unique to Northern Ireland.

Queen Scallops ‘Queenies’
The queen scallop (Aequipecten opercularis) is a medium-sized species of scallop found in the northeast Atlantic off the coast of Northern Ireland. At about 7 cm (3 in) in size it is one of the smaller scallop species. The queen scallop is commonly found up to 40 m (130 ft) below mean sea level on beds of sand and gravel.
King Scallops ‘Kings’
The king scallop (Pecten maximus) is a northeast Atlantic species of scallop, an edible saltwater clam. Common names include the great scallop, king scallop, St James shell or escallop. If scallops were rated like caviar, the Northern Irish King Scallop would be at the Beluga end of the scale.

White fish
‘White fish’ is the collective industry name for the non-shellfish seafood caught off the coast of Northern Ireland in the Irish Sea or the North East Atlantic fishing areas. Our local species are cod, haddock, monkfish, sole, whiting, coley, saithe, megrim, anglers, hake, pollack, skate, ray, turbot, dabs, lemons and herring.

“If we deplete our fish stocks, lose licenses & quotas overseas, lack commercial interest in our produce and our kids don’t want to go into fishing then our future is bleak. This is why we need Government, business & the public to #supportNIfishing.”
